The Llanos region in Colombia and Venezuela includes 18% of the tropical savanna of Northern South America. In Colombia current conversion of savanna ecosystems is advancing at a rate of 200,000 ha/yr., driven by favorable policies, availability of technology and financial competitively, related to global food and biofuel markets. The foreseen business as usual landscape is a large scale extensive monoculture, with no explicit considerations about a resilient ecological landscape and ecosystem services. In order to cope with this challenge the School of Management of Universidad de Los Andes and a major group of investors agreed to carry out the design of a agro-ecological landscape covering 40,000 ha which includes an explicit framework for voluntary exclusion of agriculture in some lands with economic potential, aiming to manage resilience associated with variable climate, biodiversity loss and ecosystems services' maintenance. Here we present the identification of ecosystem services' tradeoffs associated with three scenarios of agriculture placement in the ecosystem. Major tradeoffs between economic growth and biodiversity conservation are currently being analyzed, and policy implications to scale up the experience are being proposed to environmental authorities.
