While there is a wealth of knowledge available in case-studies of landscape change and the underlying human-environment interactions, this knowledge is often not fully used in large scale analysis and models of landscape change. Large scale models are often based on simplified rule-sets based on expert knowledge or empirical relations derived from large scale patterns. However, landscape change is the result of individual decision making by land owners, their responses to incentives and adaptation to change. This complexity can be investigated only in sufficient detail within smaller case studies where place-based research is conducted. Meta-analysis is a technique that can help to analyze such knowledge on system function across case studies and identify commonalities across case studies, as well as those findings that are context specific. Such knowledge can serve to improve the representation of socio-ecological systems function in large scale models of landscape change.

This presentation will illustrate the gap between information obtained from place-based research and that used in large scale landscape models. A meta-analysis of place based research on agricultural transformations across Europe will be presented to show the potential of meta-analysis to valorize place-based research for socio-ecological system modelling.
