Students' perspectives on sustainability science research - are we moving towards un-disciplinarity?

 

How can we as graduate students and future researchers perform high quality research and build identity in the field of sustainability science, when starting as interdisciplinary individuals without profound roots in a discipline, and working within a world dominated by established disciplines?

This 1 h session contains the following parts:

 

- An interactive theater, which presents the challenges and opportunities many PhD students in resilience and sustainability science are facing when trying to perform interdisciplinary research without having a firm background in a traditional discipline.

- Presentation of a survey on the disciplinary/inter-disciplinary background of resilience researchers from different generations

- A PhD student chaired expert panel discussing challenges and opportunities for a new generation of inter-disciplinary sustainability science researchers. Panelists: Joern Fischer, David Tabara, Frances Westley

- Outlook including an invitation to the more action-oriented Cultivating a Community of Young Scholars: Where to from here?session held by the Student Organizing Committee on building a platform and forum for young resilience scholars.
