The recognition of human and natural processes as not separate but integrated into socio-ecological systems has driven a need for greater interdisciplinarity in research on such systems. We developed a model for conducting interdisciplinary research and education, based on existing literature, interviews and best practices. We first explored the origin and development of interdisciplinarity and then focused on the different ways in which knowledge is integrated in interdisciplinary exchange. The model represents a step-by-step approach to interdisciplinary research. It pays special attention to problem definition, the identification of relevant disciplines and integration of disciplinary insights, since these are key aspects in interdisciplinary research. We tested our model with students attending our Future Planet Studies bachelor program, which focuses on sustainability issues and socio-ecological change. We would like to present our model and share thoughts on interdisciplinary research and education on socio-ecological change.
