Much of the literature and dialogue produced by the resilience community conspicuously excludes the application of industry and socio-technical systems to social-ecological resilience. This session will feature a dialogue by three of the world's experts in Industrial Ecology and Applied Sustainability on how these fields can contribute towards sustainable development and resilience of social-ecological systems. The field of Industrial Ecology studies material and energy flows through complex multi-scale social-ecological and socio-technical systems. Applied Sustainability explores how to integrate sustainability science and theories in practice through public and private sector enterprises. The dialogue will cover how sustainability of the built environment and industrial systems can contribute to the resilience of emerging economies.

The speakers will cover how innovation and design of our extractive, manufactured, built and service economic systems can deliver beneficial impacts towards ecosystem biodiversity and socioeconomic equity, as well as help our systems become more resilient in the trend of increasing social, economic and ecological shocks and instability. Examples will be given on projects that have been implemented around the world, with a special mention of projects that benefit the Global South. The session will promote a high-level of interaction to explore how these research fields can become better integrated in the pursuit of a more sustainable and just future.

The session will start with a brief introduction on the potential of linking Resilience Thinking with Industrial Ecology and Applied Sustainability. The speakers will then give a short overview of their work, followed by a discussion moderated by the session chair on pathways to integrate these fields. The session will end by opening up the discussion to attendees.
