Perfume, aromatic and medicinal plants companies in the Drôme valley: examples of territorial resilience in the agro-industrial sector.

Perfume, aromatic and medicinal plants traditionally present in Mediterranean hills have seen their activity considerably increase in the Drôme valley (Northern Provence) since the 80's which has resulted in the presence of small firms with important growth rates very early in the new century.

This development is part of a non-cost competitiveness, based on the available territorial resources. In fact, this represents a combination of individual and collective resources of various kinds, such as specific knowledge, landscape, and botanic heritage, a cumulative process driven by the actors of this sector.

The choice of the temporal approach for this research aims to examine the resilience of the territory through the study of the companies' trajectories.

The communication will attempt to show how actors mobilize the available resources and manage to renew them in a context of increased competition and imitation of this model. It will be argued that entrepreneurs combine different types of resources involving an ever increasing number of heritage and symbolic resources.

The success of these activities in this area is still visible through the success of numerous companies nowadays. However, the strength of their territorial anchorage is being challenged by the production potential of this area, demand, global market competition and available funding for innovation.
